Press Release
UNG Docs 1.0 Open Source Web Office Suite has been released during CONSEGI 2011 in Brasilia and at the same time during Solutions Linux exhibition in Paris. UNG Docs was successfully implemented at Instituto Federal Fluminense in Brazil on a SlapOS distributed Cloud to provide productivity application to students and researchers. UNG Docs is part of the "UNG is Not G....." for a Free Cloud.
Brasilia (Brazil), Paris (France) - May 11, 2011 - The "UNG is Not G....." project is happy to announce the first release of its open source Web Office suite. UNG Docs 1.0 provides word processing, spreadsheet, illustration, calendaring and email. UNG Docs 1.0 is intended for early adopters and developers looking for an alternative to proprietary Web Office services. UNG Docs is also relevant for those organizations which require true privacy and enforceable resilience.
Rogerio Atem de Carvalho explains "UNG Docs was implemented at Instituto Federal Fluminense (IFF) in Brazil. It is now used by students to write reports and learn Cloud Computing. UNG Docs was deployed at IFF on standard network of GNU/Linux PCs thanks to SlapOS, the Open Source Distributed Cloud Operating system. No investment on new server infrastructure was thus required. This saved costs to our Institute without having to abandon our Freedom or Privacy."
Rafael Monnerat, CEO of Nexedi Brazil adds "we want to thank the JQuery community in the United States, Europe, China and all over the World for the marvelous open source software components which UNG Docs is based on. Without JQuery community, UNG Docs would not exist. We expect in 2011 to extend UNG Docs functional test coverage suite and test its scalability on large deployments with NEO distributed NoSQL database. We encourage community to contribute to this long term effort and in particular to the functional test suite."
Jean-Paul Smets, President of the Free Cloud Alliance says "UNG Docs is implemented as a traditional hosted architecture based on Zope/ERP5 and JQuery. It can be installed in a few minutes through standard RPM or DEB packages. Development of UNG Docs 2.0 is now starting in parallel to UNG Docs 1.x improvements. UNG Docs 2.0 will be based on the Unhosted.org architecture. First developer release is planned for Q3 2011. UNG Docs 2.0 will in particular demonstrate the first implementation of the Javascript Input Output (JIO) storage abstraction layer. We urge all Free Software developers to join the UNG project and contribute to the formation of the Free Cloud Movement."
Michiel de Jong, Founder of the Unhosted.org project concludes: "The Unhosted project is proud to be of relevance to UNG in their quest to finally, and for the first time, bring freedom and privacy to cloud computing. Thanks to its design based on widely adopted Web Standards, Unhosted.org provides nowadays the fastest path to deploy applications on distributed SaaS and Cloud".
